I have a home exchange here for ten days, giving me a chance to visit Michael and Liz. It might not sound exotic, after Buenos Aires and Valparaiso, but it is a real change from Santa Fe and a very appealing city. And it hasn’t even rained too much. It is full spring here, with blossoms covering the streets and bulbs blooming in yards. I am staying in the Hawthorne District, which is a charming area of Victorian and craft homes with a lot of interesting shops and places to eat.
There is a bus on Hawthorne that goes straight downtown for museums and galleries. And more food. Portland is a great place to walk around, always something new to see and lots of green spaces. The art museum has a fine collection of Native American art. And there is a strong craft tradition here, supporting lots of small independent businesses.
And the people are super friendly, eager to have conversations. I had a discussion of Ecco shoes at the bus stop and got a life story thrown in. Waiters ask me what I’m reading and want a review. Oh yes, and there are lots of bookstores — Powell’s of course. And Annie Bloom’s, where Michael works. Good place to hang out.
